Social Program:
What a memorable AGM!
Congress week unfolded with a remarkable blend of professional depth and warm personal connection, reflecting the spirit of friendship and fellowship that unites the IAPL.
The celebrations began on 15 October 2025 with a Thanksgiving Service to mark the 80th anniversary of P.C. Woo & Co., held at the prestigious Hong Kong Club. The subsequent reception was attended by notable figures from the legal, political and business sectors, who came together to honour the firm’s long-standing tradition of excellence, integrity and service. The dignified yet heartfelt atmosphere saw speeches and toasts paying tribute to P.C. Woo & Co.’s remarkable eight-decade journey and its enduring contribution to the legal profession in Hong Kong and beyond. This was encapsulated in their brand new logo, “Thinking Outside of the Box”.
Later that evening, participants enjoyed an exceptional start to the social programme, with Horse Racing and Dinner generously hosted by Mr Lester Huang in the Deputy Chairman’s Box. The lively atmosphere of the Hong Kong racecourse, coupled with fine dining and convivial conversation, fostered a sense of camaraderie and joy that endured throughout the week.
The following day, 16 October 2025, the focus turned to professional exchange. The day began with a legal seminar on litigation in Hong Kong, complemented by discussions on alternative dispute resolution and arbitration. These sessions provided valuable insights into current developments and trends in dispute resolution. In the afternoon, participants visited the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), gaining valuable insights into Hong Kong’s robust institutional framework for transparency and integrity. They were even invited for coffee at the ICAC, which is now produced by a robot anyway!
At lunchtime, participants gathered at the Chinese Club to enjoy traditional cuisine and animated conversation. The day concluded with a dinner generously hosted by Dr Moses Cheng and Mrs Betty Cheng — an evening marked by grace, generosity and personal connection. Dr Cheng, former president and honorary member of the International Alliance of Practising Lawyers (IAPL), reminisced about the association’s historic visit to Beijing in 2012. This visit made IAPL the first foreign legal delegation ever to be officially received by the Ministry of Justice, an honour requiring formal approval from the National Congress. This memorable reflection added a sense of continuity and shared history to an already exceptional evening.
The following day, 17 October 2025, featured visits to two key institutions: the Legislative Council and the Department of Justice (DOJ). These visits offered participants an opportunity to gain a first-hand understanding of how Hong Kong’s legislative and judicial systems work. The day culminated in the highly anticipated boat trip and dinner on Lamma Island, where the gentle sea breeze, laughter and relaxed conversation fostered an atmosphere of genuine friendship and joy against the backdrop of the glittering Hong Kong skyline.
The congress concluded on 18 October 2025 with a formal dinner, providing an elegant finale to an unforgettable week. Guests enjoyed exquisite Peking duck accompanied by a captivating live performance showcasing the traditional Chinese art of hand-pulled noodles. This combination of fine dining, cultural artistry and heartfelt speeches created the perfect conclusion to a truly remarkable gathering.
As usual, after the official events had concluded, small groups continued the exchange over a nightcap, sharing good conversation, laughter and moments of fellowship that strengthened personal and professional bonds.
All participants left the week feeling deeply grateful for the outstanding generosity and hospitality of their hosts, Lester Huang and Dr Moses Cheng, who welcomed everyone with warmth and grace, treating their guests like royalty. Their kindness, attention to detail and genuine spirit of friendship made this congress an unforgettable experience that will be cherished for many years to come.
